INNER MEDICINE-MEDITATION & WORKING WITH PAIN AND SICKNESS: Gelong Thubten : 22nd October 2pm to 5pm

In this talk, Gelong Thubten will explain the Buddhist approach to healing the mind during times of discomfort, pain and illness. We will explore how to transform our mental attitudes, so we can use challenges as catalysts for the development of compassion and spiritual growth.

Sickness and pain are often the most difficult experiences in life, but for a meditator they can become helpful methods for training the mind and cultivating qualities of patience, tolerance and compassion. When we learn to view our pain with a more mindful and creative attitude, we can become courageous, as we free ourselves from some of our habits of resistance and fear.

This talk is not intended to replace medical treatment or advice, but simply to suggest how we can strengthen our minds when faced with life’s greatest challenges.

Gelong Thubten is a Buddhist monk, meditation instructor and author. He became a monk 29 years ago at Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and served for many years as Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche’s attendant and secretary, as well as spending over six years in intensive meditation retreats, the longest of which was 4 years long.

Thubten is director of Samye Dzong Scarborough and also helps with Samye Dzong centres in Cardiff and the Highlands. He is a trustee of the humanitarian aid charity ROKPA International. Thubten was one of the early pioneers of teaching meditation in universities, schools, global companies, hospitals, prisons and addiction rehabilitation centres. He lectures at Oxford University and for the United Nations. He also trains medical students, doctors and nurses in meditation. He collaborated with Ruby Wax and neuroscientist Ash Ranpura on the book ‘How to be Human’. Thubten is the author of the Sunday Times bestselling book ‘A Monk’s Guide to Happiness’ and his next book, ‘Handbook for Hard Times’, will be published in 2023.
